Extra Battery
I Need Help with adding a extra battery to my Audio system?

Okay I want to add a extra battery in the trunk to help support my audio equipment. what guage wire would I run from the under the hood battery to the trunk battery? Also what guage wire do i run from the trunk battery to the 1.5 cap i have? also will this mess up my amps will i need a isolator? i was told that adding an extra battery can make a 24v load, and an amp can with stand from 19v to 20v, Is this true? PLEASE HELP! Thank you

Wiring an extra battery will not create a 24 volt system unless it is wired in series with your factory battery. You do not need to worry about that. First off with an extra battery the cap would be useless since a battery will supply at least 10 times more current than a 1.5 farad cap so ditch the cap crap, they are old school way to store extra current. I haven't sold any caps for about 5 years now. Run 4 guage wire from the factory battery + post back to the auxillary baterry + post. Use 4 guage wire to ground the aux battery - post to a good clean metal (scrape the paint off) part of the car body/chassis as close as you can to the aux battery. Use whatever guage wire is recommended for your amp and connect the amps 12v terminal to the aux batteries + post. Use the same guage wire to ground the amps ground terminal to the chassis of the car again making sure to use clean solid metal. If your car has a lot of electric accessories such as power windows/seats etc. or if it has a small amperage altenator you may want to go to an auto parts store and see if they have a high amp model altenator available for your car or go to an automotive electrical shop and see if they can rewind your altenator for higher current as the added drain from charging 2 batteries may eventually burn it out. Using an isolator will not prevent this from happening and is not neccessary, An isolator will simply allow the amp to draw current from the aux battery only and not from the factory battery so the amp will still not get the extra current offered by 2 batteries. They are to prevent you from running the factory battery down and leaving you stranded if you jam on your system while parked with the engine off.
