How long will my truck battery and original tires last? 2002 Ford F-150, 90,000 miles?
I bought a Ford F-150 new in 2002. I now have 90,000 miles on it seven years later. It is a 2 wheel drive, 6 cyl. 5 speed. I still have the original tires on it and they still have enough tread to pass inspection again and the battery seems ok also....7 years later it still starts strong. My question is...am I in any danger here? Will the batt. leave me stranded this winter? Will the tires dry rot on me after 7 years and 90,000 miles? Or am I ok? I also own a 2nd vehicle (Mazda).
This truck has been amazingly reliable. The only thing Ive done is change the brakes, 1 tuneup and do oil changes every 3,000-3,500 miles. The engine computer was also reprogrammed under warranty because it was running rough. That is it. A friend of mine has a Chevy full size 4x4 and his tires only lasted 20,000 miles.... I just want to get all the life I can out of these items without being unsafe...thanks for the input and advice!
Tire manufacturers now recommend replacing tires after 6 years, even if tread is still good. At 90,000 miles, yours must be close to worn out, but if they still provide decent traction and have no visible signs of damage , like sidewall cracking, then you can probably get another 5,000 to 10,000 miles out of them, but if I were you I'd get a new set same brand ,same grade, same size and drive on those for another 90,000 miles. Replacement would be advised if you live in an area that gets snow and freezing rain.
I live in eastern Canada, and it gets pretty cold in winter and sometimes scorching in Summer- but I 've had a battery last 11 years in a 1993 Tempo, with a 3.0 V-6. If starting / charging system are working as they should, then indeed a battery can last a long ,long time. I wouldn't replace it until it gives you problems. Sounds like you have a real great truck and that you treat it kindly.
