Would an old-style tube AM radio get better reception than a transistor AM radio at night?
I am considering getting a beautiful old AM radio, but it is a little on the expensive side for me. I could justify it if, at night, I could get a particular AM station I listened to in my hometown growing up. I can get it okay at night (of course) on a transistor radio I have, but I can't help but wonder if this tube radio would get it better or worse.
You can't beat those old 5-tube tube radios with the large antenna and multi-stage filtering. Modern transistor radios these days seem to be noisy, not very selective and weak on reception.
Make sure your old radio is in good shape: the filter capacitors in the power supply get leaky after a few decades, but they're easy to replace and the annoying 60 Hz hum of an open filter will go away.
Some of the tubes can be quite expensive to replace if any are bad. They made them well 40 years ago, when they still made tubes in the USA. The ones you get today are made in China and Russia, unless you find good used ones. Look for Tung Sol, RCA, Sylvania and Raytheon.
Other than news, finances and sports, AM programming kind of sucks in the San Francisco Bay Area, with all the paronoid hate monger talk shows. I like Short wave better.
If the station you want comes in on a small portable, a well-made console with a long antenna will do a good job of picking it up. Transistors can never give the kind of fidelity tubes to, when it comes out the speaker.
