How long do I cut a new suspension fork?
Just bought a full suspension MTB frame, and bought a suspension fork for it.
I just got the headset spacers and stem today, and I'm ready to install it all. Headset is installed also. How long do I cut the fork's steerer tube?
What's the proper distance above or below the top of the stem?
This is all just based off of proper fit and feel. If you have no idea what your fit is, just put on enough spaces so you feel comfortable on the bike, and then add one more spacer under the stem. Put the top cap on and tighten everything down and go for a ride. With each additional ride, move a spacer from below the stem to above it until you find your optimal riding position. Once you find the position you like, you can remove all the spacers above the stem and then cut the stem so it's 1/16" below the top of stem. It's important to leave this small gap between the top of the steerer tube and the top of the stem.
You may also chose to put a spacer or two above the stem just to give you the freedom to mess with stem height in the future or transfer the fork to a bike with a longer head tube. If you do this, again just cut the steerer tube so it's 1/16" below the top of the spacer.
